Creating Community for Men

The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential benefits and role of group art therapy for self-identified men, particularly in creating community and addressing mental health and wellbeing. The research methodology focused on case research. Data was generated from two groups, one that took place in person in and one that took place online. The in-person group had eight participants and the online group had six participants. Data was collected through note taking by facilitators, closing written surveys, and exit interviews for those who chose to take part. A thematic analysis of all the data was conducted, and six key themes were distilled in relation to the thesis question. After analyzing the key themes, six key benefits of group art therapy for men came to light. The participants transcended power structures and societal expectations, improved their emotional wellbeing, resourced themselves by connecting to nature, increased their self-awareness, experienced pleasure through play and humor, and experienced belonging and connection. These benefits reflect how group art therapy is a much-needed opportunity to create community for men.
